PodReview #1: Best of Wondery

PodReview

A note from the PR Parent: Keeping brand pages and sites fresh with useful content is something I always tell clients. It’s time I followed my own advice.

Opportunities to broaden our perspectives are always welcome here at The PR Parent. While we long sinking our teeth into some long reads, everyparent knows that sometime we just don’t have the energy to read. Fans of the long form will find a friend in podcasts as quite a few are written well (and some very well!).

But with hundreds of thousands of shows to choose from, building your playlist can be a chore in itself! This is where PodReview comes in. Each week, we give you our top 3 podcasts. Whether it’s for current events, industry-specific discussions, laughs or deep thinking… we’ve got you covered.

For this week, we’re putting a spotlight on our favorites from leading podcast network, Wondery.

Safe For Work A few years ago, I had a bad day at work. I wanted to rant about it but typed in “I hate my boss” into Spotify instead. While I was hoping that a cathartic playlist would turn up, I stumbled upon Wondery’s I Hate My Boss podcast instead. Originally, the show was hosted by Liz Dolan, formerly at the helm of Nike then NatGeo and Life Coach Larry Seal.

Since then, it has adopted a new name and new co-hosts for Liz (most recently, journalist Rico Gagliano). Whether you’re looking for communications tips, a laugh or good advice on negotiating your paycheck — this is a great podcast to subscribe to. Note: It was recently announced that Safe For Work has ended its run — still it’s a goldmine worth your time.

Business Wars We’d be hard-pressed to find a podcast that matches the level of storytelling and real-world business insights. I really enjoy listening to this podcast because it has superb sound design and the script is really engaging. If you want an inside look on how companies evolve, this is a great show to listen to. They also have expert interviews in-between series to give listeners even more information.

Start off with a few of our series faves: Facebook vs. Snapchat, Netflix vs. Blockbuster and Hearst vs. Pulitzer.

Rounding off this list is a new favorite: Ask Iliza Anything. Hosted by comic Iliza Shlesinger, the show is all at once irreverent, smart and heartwarming. This show asks listeners to send in their questions on, well, anything. Topics range from relationships (not just romantic ones) to the truly bizarre (aggressive bathroom signage). Highly recommended for moms who are torn between calling their friends for a bit of a gabfest and enjoying a pocket of quiet. Listening to Iliza and her co-host Emily is a treat.

Sometimes Iliza has guests too. Start here for her episode on COVID-19 with Dr. Daniel Dworkis, MD, PHD.

That’s it for our first PodReview! Let us know what your favorite podcasts are in the comments section. 🙂
